Northern Wisconsin Residents Now Have Access
to Green Building Products through The Color Gallery
Antigo, Wis., April 16, 2009 -- Northern and north central Wisconsin residents and businesses now have easy access to green and healthy building products offered by The Green Design Center, a “store within a store” at The Color Gallery in Antigo.
“We’re seeing a growing demand for building products that have less of an impact on the environment and that foster more healthy working and living conditions,” said Heidi Cornelius, co-owner of The Color Gallery and its Green Design Center on Highway 64 on Antigo’s north side. “Until now, it was difficult for contractors, businesses, resort owners and homeowners in northern Wisconsin to obtain those kind of products.”
The Green Design Center serves customers in a 150-mile radius of Antigo, including north to the resort areas of Vilas County, east toward Green Bay, west past Wausau, and south to the Fox Valley.
The Antigo Green Design Center offers a wide variety of products for construction, renovation and improvements to commercial and institutional buildings, hospitality sector buildings, homes and other residences.
Those products include paints that have no toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), flooring made with sustainable materials, natural clay plaster, surfaces such as counters made from recycled materials, and other environmentally friendly products that are safer for human health.
“By offering these products, we can really make a difference in the lives of people and on the planet,” Cornelius said. “This is not just about being ‘green,’ it’s about creating working and living spaces that are healthier and that make better use of the world’s resources.”
As a Green Design Center, the Antigo store also will serve as an education and resource center through Degree Of Green, a program that helps consumers make building product choices that best meet their specific needs and desires.
Degree Of Green (www.degreeofgreen.com) rates building products based on how they meet environmental, sustainable and health criteria.
“If your main interests and needs are for products that have the least negative impact on human health, Degree Of Green will identify items that qualify,” Cornelius said. “If your main concern is for products that are environmentally friendly or made in a sustainable manner, the system will identify the best products. We know ‘green’ means different things to different people; Degree Of Green helps people find the products that fit their definition and needs.”
Cornelius and her husband Jeremy bought The Color Gallery from longtime owners Jeff and Julie Zalewski in January 2008. Heidi Cornelius had been an employee of The Color Gallery.
“I have harbored a passion for our environment and how it affects everything around us, from our health to the economy, since I was very young on our family dairy farm here,” said Cornelius. “After we purchased The Color Gallery, I started to think about green and healthy building and improvement products more seriously.”
That interest prompted her and store employee Erin Rine to look into opportunities in green building products, and that eventually led to The Green Design Center, a store concept created by Andy Pace, a nationally recognized green building expert based in Waukesha, Wis.
“Through the Green Design Center, we can make a difference in the lives of our customers, and we can help our local economy by drawing customers from a larger area and by providing more installation and application work for skilled laborers we work with,” Cornelius said. “I hope that Antigo’s Green Design Center can be an example to other businesses that investing in green technology and practices not only works, but will someday be second nature.”
The Color Gallery is the area source for paints, stains, blinds, wallpaper, contractor lines and in-home decorating advice. It is also a Hunter Douglas priority dealer for window treatments.
The Color Gallery and Green Design Center is at 334 Hwy. 64. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the store opens at 8 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
